County - The Allegheny County Health Department will
launch its annual raccoon rabies vaccine baiting campaign on
August 23rd. The program is a part of a multi-state effort
to eradicate raccoon rabies and is in its ninth year in
Allegheny County. The baits, especially made for
raccoons and laced with the rabies vaccine, are
one-square-inch blocks of compressed fishmeal. Baiting will
continue for one or two weeks and be carried out by Health
Department workers wearing t-shirts and driving vehicles
marked to identify them as part of the "Rabies Control
Team." Nearly 193,000 baits will be distributed by hand in
all 130 municipalities. The health department urges people
to avoid contact with the bait and never touch it with bare
hands.
