2024 Remarkable Tree

Winner Announcement

And the Remarkable Tree winner is.....
      an American Elm/Ulmas Ameriana
estimated at 188 years old located

             on Wilvan Lane

At 12.25 feet in circumference at breast height (CBH), and an estimated 188 years old, this wonderful specimen is one of the larger American Elm trees remaining from the destructive Dutch Elm Disease.

The fungal disease has been ravaging southwestern PA for more than 65 years. It is caused by the fungi Ophiostoma ulmi and O. novo-ulmi, which are spread by elm bark beetles and through root grafts.

Our 2024 winner exhibits arboricultural perfection with exceptional structure, health, and beauty. The seeds provide food, the branches provide a roost for many turkeys and support for numerous nesting sites, while the canopy provides cooling shade for homeowners.

Don’t miss the other remarkable trees nominated in 2024 which will be featured in the Borough’s Fall Newsletter!

Nominations are now being accepted for 2025. If you know of a Remarkable Tree, please bring it to our attention by December 1, 2025!  Nomination forms are available by following the link to the News from the EAC webpage and at the Borough Office.   https://www.franklinparkborough.us/1434/News-from-the-EAC

Winner will be awarded a $100 gift certificate to Soergel Orchards.

Honoring Chief Joseph Hotnich: Join Us This National Night Out

The Franklin Park Police Department warmly invites all residents to a special event recognizing a foundational figure in our community’s history — Chief Joseph Hotnich, the borough’s first Chief of Police.

Chief Hotnich began his service in the 1950s when Franklin Park was still known as Franklin Township. In 1963, he became our very first Chief of Police and served until his untimely passing in 1966. During his short but impactful tenure, Chief Hotnich laid the groundwork for the professional, dedicated department we know today.

 Bench Dedication Ceremony

In honor of Chief Hotnich’s legacy and lasting contributions, a memorial bench will be dedicated in his name during National Night Out festivities.

Date: Tuesday, August 5
Location: Franklin Park Municipal Building
                 2344 West Ingomar Road
                 Pittsburgh, PA 15237
Time: 1900 hours (7:00 PM)

This is a heartfelt opportunity for the public to come together, reflect on our borough’s history, and celebrate the leaders who helped shape our community.

We hope you’ll join us in paying tribute to Chief Hotnich’s enduring legacy.
