STREAM SMARTS RIPARIAN BUFFER PLANTING

On Saturday, April 22, volunteers will be planting over 250 trees/shrubs along Big Sewickley Creek in Linbrook Park. This project is the result of collaboration between Franklin Park Borough and the Penn State Extension Master Watershed Steward Program of Allegheny County. Penn State Extension received a grant from the Foundation for Pennsylvania Watersheds that paid for the plants. The purpose of this project is to enhance the riparian buffer along Big Sewickley Creek. The trees and shrubs selected for planting here will, as they mature, help to prevent erosion, provide habitat and food for land and aquatic animals, shade the stream, cool the area, and clean and absorb stormwater runoff before it flows into Big Sewickley Creek. Once the trees and shrubs are planted, the Borough Parks Department will install fencing to protect them. The trees and shrubs to be planted are as follows:

             27 River Birch
            27 Silky Dogwood
            27 Winterberry
            27 Spicebush
            27 Red Chokeberry
            27 Fragrant Sumac
            27 Highbush Blueberry
            27 American Cranberry
            25 Witchhazel
            10 Washington Hawthorn
